Timing with edge pressure:

Course Complete

Lesson 3

Timing:
When using Flexion and Extension, it is important we add timing into the movements so we get the best board performance possible.

Note: By timing, I mean flexing up or down on your snowboard (through the legs) while controlling the speed in which you perform these movements.

One way we do this is by counting inside our head when riding.

As you know, we use flexion (out of the turn) to create pressure on the snowboard edge and when we want to release the pressure we stand up (Into a turn)

When we are snowboarding, it is important to have nice, smooth and fluid motions.

To help with this aspect, I want you to start counting 1, 2, 3 up (in to the turn) and 1, 2, 3 down. (Out of the turn) when you are riding. Use your full range of movement when flexing and extending.

How to:
If you imagine yourself on your snowboard making some S turns, coming into the turn, you would be slowly extending up (1, 2, 3 up) next, bringing your board down into the fall line, changing edges and then immediately start flexing back down onto the snowboard edge(1, 2, 3 down).

Timing turns:

A lot of the reason why people fall on steep terrain is because they don’t have good pressure control (flexion and extension)
It is also very important to stay relaxed in the lower body when learning this Timing technique...

If you imagine your legs acting like car suspension, you are able to absorb the ins and outs of the snow conditions.
If your legs are locked and not relaxed, it will throw your center of mass off causing you to become unbalanced and uncontrolled.

When I am snowboarding, I am always riding with flexion and extension and relaxed. (Soft in the legs)

This timing technique will take you a few days to master, but once you do, you will be ready for advanced snowboarding.

Exercise:
Practice these turn shapes with timing for a minimum of 2 days, then incorporate it into your snowboarding full time.
