Foot peddling:
Lesson 5
Goal:
To gain better board performance by becoming consciously aware of our feet.
How:
At this stage of snowboarding you should have a really comfortable feeling on your snowboard. Now I would like to talk to you about a little technique we call foot peddling.
As you know, when we make a turn, we have the weight on the front foot, strong basic stance, using good timing techniques with flexion and extension, head up and using anticipating into the turn.
At this higher level of Intermediate snowboarding, we can really start to get more out of our snowboard by using our feet consiously to help pivot the snowboard down into the fall line!
STEP 1 :
To do this, I want you to imagine yourself playing the drums with your feet and each foot has a kick peddle.
STEP 2 :
This time when you go into a turn, I want you to Extend up (releasing edge pressure), Anticipate into the turn (by looking and pointing) and at the same time I want you to exaggerate the movements of what your feet are doing.
So let’s say I’m goofy, heading across the hill to the right on my heel side edge, Instead of just letting my board come down into the fall line as normal. This time…at the initiation stage of the turn, I’m going to consciously pretend to use my kick peddle on the front foot to help steer the board down into the fall line by pressing down onto my toe edge with my toes in a more concious awareness.
STEP 4 :
Same goes for turning the other way onto my heel edge, I’m going to lift my front foot first (toes reaching for the sky) to help steer the board into the fall line, followed shortly after by the second foot.
Practice this exercise until it becomes normal and second nature.
We use this technique to help us ride black runs, short turns and moguls.
Where:
Green and Blue runs.
Exercise:
It's time to isolate the upper body and start becoming more aware of our lower body on a conscious level.

Cross your arms and really focus on using your lower body to turn your snowboard...Your main point of focus should be foot peddling.
Practice this for at least 3-4 runs, then ultimately incorporate it into your riding style.
